Trust is the foundational element that powers any successful organization. When I give talks on this subject or coach our teams, I liken trust to the deep roots of a redwood tree: unseen but vital, providing stability and strength, even during challenging times. Just like the strongest redwood trees, trust doesn’t come overnight; it takes years to build, and only moments to lose.
In today’s go-go-go, tech-centric world, it’s natural to focus on instant results. But true success isn’t about speed; it’s about sustainability. Success doesn’t happen overnight—whether it’s personal development, business, or relationships. Going slower and doing things right is what allows us to build something that lasts.
Just like the deep roots of a redwood, trust is built gradually through consistent, positive actions.
Ownership and responsibility are key in building trust within teams and organizations. Every person must take charge of their work and follow through on commitments. Trust is built when we can count on each other to complete tasks without constant follow-ups. It’s about mutual respect, accountability, and understanding that every action counts towards the bigger picture.
Trust goes beyond doing your job well—it’s about doing it with integrity. As leaders, we need to lead by example, standing tall, firmly rooted. It’s about showing up consistently, being honest, and communicating openly. It’s also essential that we take good care of ourselves so we can be our best.
Every positive action is a deposit into your trust account, and every failure to follow through is a withdrawal. Trust is earned and built over time, and it’s fragile. That’s why regular check-ins are necessary to ensure trust is present and we’re all moving forward together. When we are coaching leaders at CAM Leadership Institute, we talk about the power of staying involved initially to ensure alignment, then stepping back and allowing the team to flourish. The beauty of a redwood forest is all trees growing and standing on their own, supporting each other without codependence.
Trust is the key to creating a healthy, thriving environment where everyone wins.
How are you building trust in your work and relationships?
How can you ensure that trust remains at the core of everything we do?
Without trust, we are like a tree without roots—unable to stand tall through the storms of life and business.
